When you are ready for more advanced photography, changing from the automatic settings on your camera to using manual photography basics can help you to achieve a larger degree of control over your photographs. There are several manual photography basics you can utilize to achieve more control. 

Manual Photography Basics: Measure Light

Measuring light can be one of the first manual options you may wish to experiment with. Light with a strong degree of intensity can provide a faster image imprint than weaker intensity light. As a result, it is important to use a light meter so you will know how long the light should be exposed in order to capture the photo. 

Basically, there are two different kinds of light meters. 

They are incident and reflective light meters. An incident light meter detects the amount of light that is reflected upon the meter. A reflective light meter detects the amount of light that is reflected off the subject. All electronic cameras today have built-in light meters; however, you can also use a hand held meter as well in order to achieve a higher degree of control and precision when using manual settings. 

Manual Photography Basics: Using a Gray Card to Measure Light

In order for a light meter to assume the percentage of light that is reflected from the subject, it must be calibrated. For effective results you must be able to understand the measurement angle, how to isolate the subject you are measuring and the area where the reading is being taken. As one can imagine, this requires a lot of mental calculations. A gray card can help to reduce much of those calculations. 

In order to use a gray card correctly to measure light, you will need to angle it toward the source of the light. Ideally, it should be angled both vertically and horizontally. 

Manual Photography Basics: Exposure Controls: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO

The ISO number is a rating of the cameras sensor (or films) sensitivity to light. You will commonly hear the term 'stop' referred to in photography. One ISO stop increase would refer to the sensitivity being doubled. Higher ISO settings can be used with advantages for low light situations; however, you will find they tend to produce more grain (film camera) or noise (digital camera) so you should be aware of this before using high ISO settings. 

The shutter speed allows you control over the amount of time during which the shutter is open to allow light to pass through and reach the sensor or film. 

Stops are also used in order to measure the speed of the shutter as well. A one stop increase in shutterspeed cuts the amount of time in half that the shutter remains open. This will consequently cut the amount of light that reaches the cameras sensor or film in half.

Aperture refers to the size of the opening of the lens. This setting will control the amount of light that passes through to the camera's sensor. It can also determine the DOF. Like many other settings, aperture is also measured in terms of stops. In aperture settings, it is measured in terms of f-stops. Each stop increase will double the amount of light that is allowed to pass through. 

Manual Photography Basics: Focus

There are several different situations in which you may wish to change to the manual focus on your camera rather than use the automatic focus setting. Using the manual focus tends to provide you with more control over the focusing. Portraits are one situation in which manual focus is ideal. Using manual focus helps to ensure the eyes of the subject are in perfect focus. 

Using manual focus when shooting through mesh or glass can also be advantageous. This is because the mesh or glass tends to confuse the camera regarding where to focus when the automatic focus is employed. With manual focusing you can avoid this problem. 

Automatic focus is great in fast moving action photography but the cameras auto-focus is sometimes not fast enough. In this case you can preset the focus on the right distance manually and wait for the right opportunity.

The auto-focus on many cameras don't work well in low light conditions so you may need to set your camera to manual focus.

Online Photography Courses - A Simple Reflector Method

Want to make your outdoor photographs more dramatic? Modifying the sunlight is simple to do and can alter the mood of your photographs substantially. The good thing about this technique is it is really simple and requires little equipment for low or no cost.

All you need for this technique is good sunlight, a model or any subject and one reflector. You can buy a reflector for low cost or you can make one from scrap. This can be large card, Styrofoam sheeting, a poster board, a mirror, or anything that will reflect light. If you choose board you need to paint one side so that it reflects well. White and silver are the most common colors to paint the surface; these will be the most reflective. Also, the bigger the reflector the better; this is especially desirable if you are photographing people. 

Mid afternoon sunlight provides great saturated colors for photography and is ideal for reflecting light back to one side of your subject. Unlike a studio light, you can't change the angle of the sun to suit your lighting requirements. But you can use reflectors to help you.

Using a reflector is easy; just position so the sun hits the reflector and bounces back onto the subject. Since you cannot control the sun, you will need to manipulate the placement and angle of the reflector and subject so you get the directional light you want.

Photographers usually use a reflector to fill harsh shadows created by direct sunlight. The sun serves as your main or key light and the reflector serves as your fill light. Use the reflector to fill in the shadow area of your subject. The amount of fill is determined by you, but is conditional on the size of the reflector, the reflection capacity, closeness to the subject and the strength of the sunlight.

Reflectors are a simple method for throwing additional light to subject areas that need more light. Pack one in your kit next time you make some portraits in the outdoors. Are you ready to take the jump from amateur photography to professional?

Amateur photography as a hobby serves many important purposes in life. This is true regardless of your amateur status - every day millions of great images are captured by young and old amateur photographers around the world  and end up never being seen by anyone. 

We all like to take images during special occasions, or when we go on holidays we like to record the special event. Did you ever consider publishing your best work on the web? 

Most amateur photographers would like to be able to sell their work. Knowing where and how will certainly give you a helpful start. 

Taking the jump from amateur photography to professional or semi-professional photography isn't easy and will seem like a daunting task at the best of times. The following is a guide to help you if you are ready to take the jump.

You don't need a collection of hundreds of images to start selling. If you  have a collection of twenty good images, you're off to a good start. 

The first step is to create an online portfolio or Website.  If your photography interests involve landscape, wildlife or any images that can also be sold as framed prints, create an online credit card facility so that visitors to your website have the option of buying.  

The next step is to submit images and your website details to companies that might use your work. Contact local newspapers and local advertising companies that may suit your photography interest.

Photography Workshops and Master Classes

Several years ago, I met a fellow photographer - albeit, he was an amateur, a very good one (the difference is not the quality of the work . the difference is that one does it for love, the other does it for money). He is now a new friend and fellow photographer named Marco, an Italian. His day job is as a top children's heart surgeon. His passion for photographing people takes him all over the world, 

seeking out that special face, interesting enough to be captured on film/file.

During our brief encounter in my brother's hairdressing salon, we had found common ground and a need to explore each other's pictures. He asked me if I would visit his photographic society to meet the other members and discuss the possibility of me giving a talk about my fashion photography. I said to Marco, "Whatever will I talk about?"

Well, first off, he said, there is something very magical in the expressions of my models and in the atmosphere of my pictures that he would love to have in his. He asked me how do you achieve this. Shocked at his remark, I said, "No, I can't, because I don't know myself." You have to find out he said because this is what you should talk about. We spent the next couple of hours disgussing photography and the feelings and techniques of managing your subjects whilst shooting.

During my visit to his camera club, we arranged for my talk to be done nearly 9 months later, so I had time to think about my talk and to get myself prepared.

For days, I looked at my work and examined myself whilst shooting assignments. It was maybe 6 months later whilst photographing a bridal-wear collection for one of my clients that something clicked. (No pun intended!)

I had decided that I would like to start shooting with wider lenses to change the style of my bridal-wear pictures. I shoot for so many bridal-wear designers, so I have to make them look and feel different to the each other. It also helps to use a short zoom, because during most of my shoots, I can take a variety of images from full length to portrait shots from the same distance, so my client gets much more usage out of the shots. 

While moving in closer to my model, I noticed a big difference in the expressions in her face and her body language - they changed, as I got closer. I experimented more and began to play with this for the rest of this shoot. Not only could I see better, it also created a much better flow of the energy and communication between my model and myself. For years, I have been shooting fashion pictures using medium-length telephotos, at times so far away that my models could not hear me directing them. An amazing thing had happened. I could see and control so much more in my pictures. Not to say that I will never use long lenses, just that I prefer the new results that I am getting with wide lenses. In fact, most of my recent projects I have shot with a wide zoom. 

I find that by doing the poses and expressions in my face that I want, my models seem to mirror mine. If I act daft, they act daft. If I laugh, they laugh. If I pull a sad face, they pull a sad face - which always makes them smile :-)

Since this experiment, I have been adapting my directions to my models in much the same way, obviously changing my energy levels to match the levels I want in my pictures. If I want a nice soft and gentle feel, I express this in my voice and my manor and my body. If I want high energy, I do high energy. If I want my model to leap, I will leap. 

Think about this as if you were a conductor. The next time you attend a concert, watch him or her, and watch the orchestra. They mirror him - fast tempo, slow tempo, and medium tempo. You can do the same with your models.

Fashion pictures for me have RHYTHM and TEMPO. If you want to express high energy or tempo in a picture, the shoot has to be high energy or tempo, or visa-versa.

I look at pictures and sometimes wonder how boring the shoot must have been. I love to change the tempo up and down whilst I'm shooting, I would hate it if anyone viewing my pictures did not feel this energy. This is why I strive to make my shoots exciting for myself, my model, the other members of my team, and, most important, for my clients.

As a photographer, you are the conductor, your models are your orchestra, and your clients or viewers of the pictures are the audience. So you have to direct and entertain. Your performance will reflect in your pictures.

I want you to try a little experiment. The next time you have people over to your house or you get a moment with some people at work, pick a volunteer. Face each other, one or two feet apart, don't speak, and don't look at each other. In fact, do your best to imagine they are not there. Stay like this for 30 seconds and remember how this feels. Stay in this position but hold each other's hands, look into each other's eyes, smile at each other, don't speak. Instead of imagining they are not there, do the opposite. Try and send them all of your good energy. Stay like this for 30 seconds. Remember how this feels, and compare the feelings. Ask your friend or colleague and the others to explain how it felt for them. The next time you are shooting pictures, remember all of these feelings.
